Winter Ailments cold and flu – Antibiotic Duration prescribing Tips

NICE publish primary care prescribing guidelines for a range of common infection topics, which include recommendations on the choice, dose, and course length of antibiotics. Prescribing longer course lengths than guideline recommendations may lead to antibiotic overuse, increased risk of side effects and increased risk of antibiotic resistance. A recent meta-analysis estimated that each additional day of antibiotic therapy is associated with a 4% increase in risk of side effects and a 3% increase in risk of resistance. Dorset Primary Care Networks (PCNs) – Community Pharmacy Dorset CPLSC would also strongly recommend watching the Virtual Outcomes 18 minute session on Equality Act and multi-compartmental compliance aids – myths and facts The Interactive Guide document sets out issues to be considered by Commissioners, Prescribers, Dispensers including Community Pharmacy and Care Providers. The purpose of this document is to support people who are prescribed medicines. This document will refer to individuals as patients although other services may use alternative terms. This document will address three areas where support may be required to assist medicine taking:

• Patients in their own home managing medicine independently or with support from informal carers.
• Patients living in their own home or in the community with support from a social care provider.
• Patients in care homes. Please also refer to CPE briefing on Equality Act PSNC Briefing 001/16: Equality Act 2010 (January 2016) – Community Pharmacy England (cpe.org.uk)
